Dear Fifth Grade Families, The Fun Run today lived up to its name, it was a lot of fun! Seeing my students just get to be kids and run around was a blast! I will be posting pictures later when I collect them from others, as I was having so much fun with the kids I did not take any! We had a really good week overall, in class we have been working hard to become more independent about following class rules and needing fewer reminders to accomplish given tasks. In reading this week we worked on summarizing a text and identifying cause and effect relationships between two events. In writing we started our argumentative writing unit by learning to take notes and gather evidence from both sides of an issue. In math we finished up multiplication of fractions and decimals and have moved on to the other part of this module which is division of fractions and decimals. We should finish this unit right before spring break. Next week I plan to teach lessons 27-30. In social studies we continued to learn about taxation and also began learning about reactions to the quartering act in the colonies. We have our field trip to the Pacific Science Center on Tuesday! We will be leaving school at around 9:15. Students should either bring a packed lunch from home or let me know by Monday if they will be purchasing a school made sack lunch to bring with them. We will not be back at school until right before 2pm. There are still several students who have either not paid the $18.00 for the trip or asked me for a scholarship. We have some money set aside for students who need it but ask that those who can, pay the the $18.00 which covers the cost of each students admission to the center and the lab activity, as well as helps to pay for the bus ride to the science center. Upcoming Dates: Tuesday March 26th: Field Trip to Pacific Science Center & Report Cards go live Friday March 29th- Spring and Class pictures (forms went home today) April 8-12th- Spring Break Here is a link to IVE E-news https://connect.issaquah.wednet.edu/elementary/ive/about/news/b/lastest_news/posts/ive-e-news-3-22-19

Hello Fifth Grade Families,
Here is an update about what we have been doing in class as well as what we have to look forward too. This week students worked hard to complete their informational writing assignments and their mid-module 4 assessments. We also spent the whole week in reading working on what makes a good summary. Next week students will finish their “passion projects” and we will be doing lessons 14-18 in math. We will be starting a special science readers workshop called Science is Alive. We will be building on the work we have been doing in non-fiction, with high interest non-fiction texts. In social studies students are getting into the story of the revolutionary war by becoming characters in colonial Boston. Looking further ahead we will be in module 4 of math until the end of March we are scheduled to take the end of module assessment in the first couple days of April. We will be doing the Science is Alive unit for 3 weeks and then we will be doing unit 8 of the Making Meaning curriculum which focuses on inferencing. After we conclude the passion project assignments next week, we will be diving into argumentative writing using the Lucy Calkins Writing Units of Study. When we finish our social studies unit we will be starting our physical science unit. On March 11th we will be taking a trip to Issaquah Middle school to help prepare students for their transition to middle school next year. Make sure to participate in the Orange Ruler Fundraiser, so our school can get much needed funds and our class can earn really awesome prizes!
